چکیده

| Random Early Marking (REM) consists of a link algorithm, that probabilistically marks packets inside the network, and a source algorithm, that adapts source rate to observed marking. The marking probability is exponential in a link congestion measure, so that the end{to{end marking probability is exponential in a path congestion measure. Marking allows a source to estimate its path congestion measure and adjusts its rate in a way that aligns individual optimality with social optimality. Because of the ner measure of congestion provided by REM, sources do not constantly probe the network for spare capacity, but settle around a globally optimal equilibrium, thus avoiding the perpetual cycle of sinking into and recovering from congestion. We rst derive REM as a distributed implementation of a gradient projection algorithm to maximize aggregate source utility over source rates. The gradient projection algorithm, whose stability and fairness have been proved even in an asynchronous environment, determines the macroscopic behavior of REM. We then illustrate through extensive simulations that REM is stable, fair and robust.

Random early marking: improving TCP performance in DiffServ assured forwarding

In the context of Active Queue Management, intelligent dropping algorithms have been proposed to achieve a better link utilization with TCP. In this paper we apply this research to the problem of achieving a better utilization of a customer’s contracted throughput when it is sending a TCP traffic aggregate. We propose a scheme, Random Early Marking (REM), that improves the throughput of a TCP a...

Price Computation in Random Early Marking (REM)

AbsrrcrWe proposed earlier a flow control algorithm derived from solving the dual of a welfare " b a t i o n problem. The algorithm however requires communication between network links and sources that is not achievable on the eurrpnt Internet. We then extended the basic algorithm to a Random Early Marking (REM) scheme which can be implemented using only binary feedback. In this paper we propos...

On Packet Marking Function of Active Queue Management Mechanism: Should It Be Linear, Concave, or Convex?

Recently, several gateway-based congestion control mechanisms have been proposed to support the endto-end congestion control mechanism of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). In this paper, we focus on RED (Random Early Detection), which is a promising gateway-based congestion control mechanism. RED randomly drops an arriving packet with a probability proportional to its average queue length (i...

Hybrid Random Early Detection Algorithm for Improving End-to-End Congestion Control in TCP/IP Networks

The successful operation of the present Internet depends mainly upon TCP/IP which employs end-to-end congestion control mechanisms built in the end hosts. In order to further enhance this paradigm of end-to-end control the Random Early Detection algorithm has been proposed, which starts to mark or drop packets at the onset of congestion. The paper addresses issues related to the choice of queue...
